POT and MOS

Posted by Satuki On May - 18 - 2009

There was almost no resistance from the bears today.  The market moved up.  I tried to help them by shorting a few stocks. But all of them died as you can see from my portfolio .  My only swing trade MOS behaved as expected in a strong market. It went up and hit my target.  The exit was very clean. In other words, I never hesitated. Yeah there might be some more legs up. But I do not care anymore.

MOS and POT have been extremely strong lately as we can see from the charts.  Most other stocks had a pull-back before today.   If you look at their candle sticks today, they finished at the high of the day.   In other words, there is no weakness yet.  They are in a beautiful uptrend. If you have profitable positions, hold onto them. If you do not have any long positions in it, do not chase it.  The train has left the station. If you chase it, you will likely take it on your chin.  From this point on, no one knows how much buying power is left for these 2 guys in the short term.  They might move up a little more or have a quick pull back.

Stocks always pull back.  Most of them do at least.   Good swing long/short opportunities with best risk/reward ratio are few. If you can catch 1 or 2 every month, you should pat yourself on the back.  As you can see from my MOS trade, I had such a tiny position. Yet the return is very solid.  What if I had 1500 shares?  Then I could have made over 10k and then I could stop trading for the month right?

The first bar out of a consolidation area is the best bar to buy/short a position.

Just curious. Are the charts you post from tradestation?

    Very nice MOS too.

Yep It is from Tradestation. It’s charts are best I have ever seen. I used ETrade, Fidelity, Interactive Brokers, ThinkorSwim. Nothing comes close.

How does esignal compare to TradeSation?

If I had 1500 shares of MOS, I would close it when It was up only 3%. Hahaha, I think I am a one lot trader. Oh Well.. what can I do?

TM, it’s hard to tell from just a picture. I don’t see anything paritculary different but I’m under the impression TS has features that esignal lacks. I’ve never heard anything bad about TS charts. The reason I asked, in fact, was because the chart you posted doesn’t really look much different from mine. Just wonder where it care from.

I haven’t tried TradeStation but think ToS with Prophet charts are pretty good. What feature in TradeStation charts do you think is better?

Also a look at the poll on the right side of your site for “What broker do you use for serious trading?” shows the most popular is ToS with Tradestation coming in 6th.

However, trying out the ToS futures daytrading is pretty painful as I’d rather use Ninjatrader. Maybe ToS is better for swing trading.

I think you are right about TOS. TOS’s charting is perhaps decent although it could be better. What I like about TradeStation’s charting is that I can use the arrow buttons to decrease /increase the size of charts. In addition, TS has more than 20+ years of data.

The reason that a lot of people use TOS is

1: They do not have to pay any subscription fees. That is also the reason why their commission is much higher than TS or IB. It is just too expensive for scalpers
2: TS has only a desktop platform. Yet TOS has everything you can image, desktop, browser based, mobile.

If you are a swing trader, it is good to stick with TOS.

Do you think POT is consolidating for another move up or it is out of steam now?

    • http://www.momdaytrader.com/blog/ Satuki (Trader Mom)

I have not seen any weakeness yet in pot. If I had a profitable position, I would try to hold onto it. But I would not add at this level.

How do you pay so little commissions on your trades? Thanks for the great site you have and I’m sure it will gain popularity fast.
